A film poem centered on world-renowned mountaineer Marek Holeček, an intimate reflection on the pull of the vertical world, the search for freedom, and the unending determination to push beyond one's limits.
Eternal Longing follows Marek Holeček on an expedition in the Central Himalaya while returning to the defining moment of his childhood, when he first overcame fear and discovered the path that would shape his life. Interweaving the present with memories, the film becomes a visual meditation on courage, the desire to transcend oneself, and the magnetic allure of the mountains.
Marek Holeček's Statement:
"Where does longing come from? How is it born – that restless little creature that never lets me be? It carries a relentless force, sinking its teeth into my dreams and refusing to leave, even after I open my eyes. It keeps returning, each time more vivid, more complete. Gradually, it becomes part of everyday life – until it is no longer just a dream, but something already lived. I can feel the tension, the warmth and the cold, the scents carried by the wind, the air moving through my hair, the quiet satisfaction, and the unbreakable bond of friendship tied together by a rope, surrounded by the silent beauty of the mountains.
Sometimes this longing lies hidden deep inside the mind for years, without a single step being taken. It may even remain unfulfilled. Yet rather than standing still, I have always chosen to set out in search of an answer. Longing has no end; it can never be satisfied. It carries me over obstacles, draws me away from the warmth and safety of home. There are failures, and sometimes success – but every summit simply reveals another path waiting beyond.
Perhaps the answer to my restless nature lies somewhere in childhood: in the first knots my father taught me to tie, and in the first rock climbs we shared. That boyish curiosity – the urge to dream and explore – has never left me. It has stayed with me throughout my life."
