For 35 years, Swiss-Canadian bear researcher Reno Sommerhalder has returned time and again to the remoteness of Alaska, to the primeval forests of the Tongass, also known as the Amazon of North America. This summer Reno Sommerhalder wants to become even more intimate with this wilderness, by trying as far as possible, to gather his food from nature - just like the bears do. Salmon are his main staple. Next to crabs and other shellfish, he also collects berries and mushrooms and digs for roots. But during his forays he realizes that the Tongass has changed: The glaciers are melting here too, the vital salmon runs have become irregular, the bears rarer.
